Robert Magnus is an accomplished senior executive and thought leader with over thirty years in the veterinary health care and business consulting industries. He is the founder and past CEO of Wisconsin Equine Clinic & Hospital, a full-service nationally renowned equine referral hospital and ambulatory practice established in 1992. Starting this business as a solo practitioner, he guided the growth of this practice to include over twelve veterinarians and twenty-five support staff. In 2005 he founded Equine Business Management Strategies LLC, an executive business education program for the equine veterinary industry. Robert joined the business consulting firm, Oculus Insights LLP with two colleagues; Mike Pownall from Canada and Joop Loomans from Holland. Together this team has expanded business education offerings on a global level to the veterinary profession beyond North America including Europe, Australia, New Zealand and China. The Oculus scope of services has grown to include; full operational management services, business project consulting, HR management services, meeting facilitation, and animal health industry B2B collaboration. The driving forces are to utilize insights, evidence-based business concepts, and our experiences to implement positive outcomes for our clients.
Robert enjoys sharing his passion for learning and enthusiasm for business with his peers. He has presented multiple times for the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) Annual Convention and other national programs on topics such as: Benchmarking & Performance Metrics, Marketing in Practice, Value Drivers, Growth Strategies, The Business News Hours, Pricing Strategies, Business Case Reports, Wellness Programs, and more. He has published on the use of Financial Statements in Practice, Marketing Your Practice, Management by Fire, Prescription Management and other pressing issues in the marketplace.
Internationally, Robert has presented on the topics of Negotiation Training, Marketing Strategy, Benchmarking, Dashboards, KPIs, Operational Metrics, Improving Profitability, and Preparing Your Practice for The Future. Currently Robert serves on several boards including as Chairman of the Board for a select group of practices Oculus offers management services for in the United States. Joop Loomans graduated at the Veterinary Faculty of Utrecht University the Netherlands in 1988. The first thirteen years of his career he was an associate and later partner in an eight vet mixed practice in the east of the Netherlands. His main field of interest was equine and large animal practice with a special focus on management. In 2001 Joop was asked to join the Department of Equine Sciences at Utrecht University to lead and grow the Equine Ambulatory Clinic. Another mission was to perform scientific research on the social and economic situation of equine veterinarians, including market research in the field of (semi) professional horse owners. This resulted in many submitted scientific articles in international peer reviewed veterinary journals, lectures all around the world and a doctoral thesis entitled: “The equine veterinarian: past present and prospects of a profession”. With Bob Magnus, Joop initiated and organized “Equine Business Management Strategies International” in Europe. Bringing together equine veterinarians from different parts of the world and discussing subjects with well-known international experts from other industries does not only increase the awareness, but also provide practical business solutions for all attendants. In 2010 Joop was asked by the management of the Department of Equine Sciences, Utrecht University to perform a fact finding mission at Heilan International Equestrian Club in China. This resulted in a long time relationship. Joop is designer and Chief Veterinarian of the newly build first western equine clinic in mainland China and team veterinarian for the Jiangsu province eventing, show-jumping and dressage teams. Furthermore Joop is founder and director of Loomans International Veterinary Expertise, a networking and consultancy firm for the equestrian industry. He is advising horse related industries from all over the world on entering the Chinese market. Together with Bob Magnus and Chuck Johnson, Joop started the Oculus Insights Group, a global company providing business resources, novel tools, education and market research for healthcare professionals.

Mike Pownall DVM, MBA

Mike Pownall DVM, MBA

Prior to becoming a veterinarian Dr. Mike Pownall worked as a farrier for seven years. His interest in equine lameness led him to attend the Ontario Veterinary College, graduating in 2001. In 2002 he and his wife, Dr. Melissa McKee, started McKee-Pownall Equine Services.

Their organization is represented by 3 equine veterinary clinics with 10 vets and 20 support staff spread across the Greater Toronto Area. He is also a partner with Oculus Insights offering business education to veterinarians throughout the world.

Dr. Pownall received his MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario, and was the class valedictorian. He presents internationally on business strategy, pricing, digital marketing and technology for veterinarians. He also contributes to numerous journals on business management topics.

Katie Ardeline is a Human Resources professional with over 10 years’ experience in the Equine and Small Animal veterinary industry. Katie graduated from the University of Toronto in with a Bachelor’s Degree in 2003, and then completed a post-degree Human Resources Management certificate program at Mohawk College, culminating in the acquisition of her Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) designation.

Katie’s role at Oculus sees her working with a wide variety of clients and audiences in various capacities. She presents and conducts workshops on numerous aspects of HR Management including Employee Engagement in a variety of venues, including numerous Equine Business Management Summits in both North America and Europe. Katie is skilled providing HR support in various capacities, from consulting and customized support of targeted stand-alone initiatives to building entire HR programs for clients from the ground up.

Prior to working with Oculus, Katie was the Operations Manager at McKee-Pownall Equine Services, an equine veterinary practice that employs over 30 people, including 10+ veterinarians, across three practices in the Greater Toronto, Ontario and Wellington, Florida area that is recognized in the equine veterinary industry for its emphasis on employee care and work-life balance. Before working at McKee-Pownall, Katie was the Human Resources Administrator for a large accounting firm in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

While Katie is involved with all functional areas of Human Resources, her true passion lies in helping employees develop the tools they need to grow and flourish through a structured and collaborative system of coaching and goal-setting.

Sue is a holding partner in 3 Veterinary Clinics and serves as the Treasurer of the overall Holding Company. After completing 24 years of sales in the CPG industry she returned to school to obtain her Coaching Certification and formed Personal Innovations Coaching an Executive Coaching Company. Sue is passionate about helping people of all levels of business achieve their personal and professional potential. By helping clients recognize and develop their leadership skills, she empowers them to create more positive management environments, increase employee engagement and improve overall performance. Sue’s experience with the Veterinary industry provides her with insight and understanding to help Veterinary Teams maximize their potential.

Glenn graduated from OVC in 1992 and has successfully been practicing mixed animal medicine in South Western Ontario. He has ownership in 3 clinics and furthering his passion for the business side of Veterinary Medicine completed his MBA at the Richard Ivey School of Business in 2015. After graduation, Glenn’s focus has been on strategy development in Veterinary medicine with an emphasis on creating structured decision making processes and achieving stakeholder consensus. Glenn has presented on this topic at several veterinary associations including LAVA, NOVA and the OVMA. Glenn is actively involved in the veterinary community having done a 6 year term on the Colleges Complaints Committee and currently serves on the Ontario Veterinary Medical Associations Board of Directors, Economics Committee and Large Animal Issues Committee. Glenn’s goal in participating is to improve financial wellbeing of all Veterinarians.
